Speaker: Steve Brink, California Forestry Association
Current Events in Washington D.C. and in Region 5 that affect the Forest Service

For 2018 and the foreseeable future, Vegetation Management (fuels reduction) will be the Forest Service Priority.  Region 5 has taken steps to enhance accomplishments to meet the Forest Products target increase from 315 mmbf last year to 370 mmbf for 2018 and the hazardous fuels reduction target increasing from around 120,000 acres/year to 216,000 acres for 2018.  The Omnibus Spending Bill (March 23, 2018 set the Forest Service budget for 2018 and provided a wildfire funding fix and some forest management reforms. The House version of the 2018 Farm Bill Forestry Title (Chapter VIII) has 37 sections providing further streamlining and enhancements to allow the Forest Service to accomplish more.  These along with an Undersecretary nominee and other items of interest will be addressed.

Steve was born and raised in Placerville, CA; he graduated from the University of California at Davis with a degree in civil engineering in 1971.

Steve retired July 2005 from the U.S. Forest Service after 37 years.  He had 10 assignments with the Forest Service scattered across the country including tours on the Eldorado, Inyo, Six Rivers, Stanislaus, and Tongass National Forests; assignments in the California, Intermountain, and Alaska Regional Offices; and the National Office.

While in Alaska, Steve was Forest Engineer at Sitka, Tongass Plan Revision Team Leader in Juneau, and his last assignment prior to retirement was as Deputy Regional Forester in Juneau, Alaska January 2002 through July 2005.

He has been with the California Forestry Association as Vice President for Public Resources since July 2005.  He focuses on wood supply from California’s National Forests, forest-related national statutes, regulations, and Appropriations, California diesel engine rules, and carbon accounting for cap-and-trade and offsets programs.
