Fire Adapted 50 (FA50) came about through joint strategic planning by the Eldorado National Forest and CAL FIRE-AEU after the 2014 King Fire. It involves collaborative “All Lands” fuel reduction in 3 areas of the Highway 50 corridor and is an important part of the SOFAR Cohesive Strategy.
A new Fire Adapted 50 map was developed for a briefing that was part of a congressional field trip hosted by the Western Caucus Foundation last week. The briefing was given by Laurence Crabtree, Forest Supervisor, Eldorado National Forest; Tom Tinsley, Unit Forester, CAL FIRE Amador El Dorado Unit; Dan Corcoran, Director of Operations, El Dorado Irrigation District; Tim Tate, Southern Sierra Area Manager, Sierra Pacific Industries; and Mark Egbert, District Manager, El Dorado County & Georgetown Divide Resource Conservation Districts.
Fire Adapted 50 is a great example of shared stewardship and active forest management that is using all available tools to get work done as efficiently as possible: (1) Good Neighbor Authority and Master Stewardship Agreements; (2) the Healthy Forest Restoration Act categorical exclusion for wildfire resilience projects; (3) CEQA exemptions; and (4) joint NEPA-CEQA environmental analysis.
The Fire Adapted 50 map is available on the Eldorado National Forest website
here.
The Forest Service portion of the Sly Park Projects (Phase 1) and the Camino-Pollock Pines Fuel Break (Phase 2) are in the environmental planning process now.
