Meeting: August 20, 2020, 1:00 – 2:30 PM (Virtual Meeting via ZOOM):

Hello SLAWG members,

The next SLAWG meeting will be next Thursday, August 20th from 1:00-2:30 pm. The goal will be to continue discussing high-valued resources and assets (HVRAs) to be included in ACCG’s Prioritization Tool which will ultimately define priority areas across the landscape for future fuels reduction work.
As promised at the last meeting, attached is a spreadsheet with the five proposed ACCG Prioritization Tool HVRAs (Communities, Infrastructure, Wildlife/Ecosystems, Watersheds, and Economic Assets) broken down into potential sub-HVRAs. If you are interested and have some time between now and next Thursday, take a look at the spreadsheet. I may make some further revisions between now and next Thursday, but I will spend the first 20-30 minutes of the meeting going through the spreadsheet in detail. Note- there is a second worksheet within the spreadsheet with additional potential HVRAs and sub-HVRAs that we could include.
Each sub-HVRA has a response function (RF) score for each of the predicted flame length classes (fire intensity levels), and has a relative importance (RI) score per unit area (if available), taken from peer-reviewed literature and/or other wildfire risk assessments (indicated in the spreadsheet and a list of them is below). Note that the Communities and Watersheds HVRAs have two different scenarios we could use (i.e., Communities version A vs. Communities version B). And, as a reminder, RFs are a tabulation of the relative change in value of an HVRA if it were to burn in each of six flame-length classes, and RIs are an importance score given to each sub-HVRA relative to every other sub-HVRA. RFs and RIs (along with sub-HVRA relative extent, RE, and flame length probability for each flame-length class) will be used to calculate the conditional net value change (cNVC) for each sub-HVRA, and then ultimately the total cNVC and the expected net value change (eNVC, accounts for burn probability) across all HVRAs will be calculated, which will be used to define the ACCG’s priority areas.
Below are the links to risk assessments I cite in the spreadsheet if you were interested:
Meeting agenda is also attached and zoom meeting info is below. Email me if you need clarification or if you want to chat before the meeting.
Thanks!

Megan Layhee is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Workshops November 19, December 3, December 11

ACCG’s Strategic Landscape Assessment Work Group (SLAWG) is following up their December 2019 workshop and subsequent endeavors to develop a project inventory and landscape prioritization tool with a two-part e-workshop series this November and December. The workshops will provide participants with a thorough understanding of the Project Inventory & Landscape Prioritization Tool developed by Megan Layhee (GIS Consultant, Landmark Environmental/UMRWA) and the SLAWG, and also provide an opportunity for participants to provide feedback and suggestions on the products. The E-Workshop, Part I will be offered on on two separate days (11/19 and 12/3), and it will provide participants with a broad understanding of the ACCG Fuels Reduction & Stand Structure Altering Project Inventory Database (“Mapper”) and the Prioritization Tool, and its intended application for the ACCG. The second part of the series, E-Workshop Part II, will occur on Friday, 12/11, and will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the workflows and steps involved in maintaining and updating the Mapper and Tool with ArcGIS software.
Note: Access to ArcGIS software is not required to participate in this zoom workshop. Also, a draft how-to handbook will be provided prior to the e-workshops for participants to follow along with during the e-workshop.

E-Workshop Series Schedule:
  • E-workshop Part I – Thurs., 11/19 10 am – 3 pm (1-hr break from 12-1pm)
  • E-workshop Part I – Thurs., 12/3 10 am – 3 pm (1-hr break from 12-1pm) (repeat workshop – if you participate in the 11/19 e-workshop, you don’t need to attend this one)
  • E-workshop Part II – Fri., 12/11 10 am – 3 pm (1-hr break from 12-1pm)
Please see the attached workshop agendas for additional information.  The Zoom conferencing details are to follow as the dates draw near.
